Giethoorn was founded around 1230, when so-called ‘ flaggelanten ‘ (wandering itself self-degree switch because of the plague) located in the savage land. There was a village where residents engaged with peat digging, fisheries, cane cultivation and small-scale farming.
Peat grounds were used by the uncontrolled, most in storms and floods the lakes in the area: the Bovenwiede, Zuideindiger, Wiede Molengat, large and Quiet Belterwiede and of course the Beulakerwiede, where Beulaecke in 1776 the village disappeared in the waves.
For the transportation of peat were dug the canals. Many were Later converted into peat houses and farms were also cattle, hay and yes even the postman and the Baker, by boat through the canals.
Still is a big part of the old village only via the water and a bike-pedestrian path with many bridges to reach. This entourage, along with the many old peat cottages and farms, often with typical camel roofs, giethoorn makes a popular spot for tourists and day trippers. It is there wonderful cycling, boating and hiking.
Winter is the time of a single hiker and, ice and re-serving, thousands of skaters. The after season is the cosy and peaceful. The main season is crowded, with numerous events, such as the Gondola sea shipping, jazz and blues festival, the battle op ’t Wiede (with choirs) and so on.
Smit giethoorn is an ideal starting point for your day of giethoorn. With all comforts
provide, we offer many opportunities for your day of giethoorn a success.
We are pleased to see you at our company!
Giethoorn is best experienced from the water. In our covered boats we guide you on a tour through the old village and over the lake. On the route you pass beautiful farms, numerous bridges and plank bridge and many sights. Through the (shallow) Bovenwijde you come back to our company. This route takes approximately one hour.
Of course, most of our guided touring boats are accessible for the disabled. Three of our boats are electrical propelled. Our cruise skippers are all in the possession of their boatmasters and inform you about the history and the present of giethoorn. In consultation, it is possible to travel with a stop at a museum or the cruise to expand with the route through a part of National Park Weerribben and Wieden.
It’s also possible to rent an electrical propelled open family boat to make these same tours with your family and steer the boat yourself. The engines are easy to operate so that even the largest landlubber can handle. Beside the common whisperboats we also have a few luxury electrical sloups available.
In our fleet we also provide punts (“punters”). Venice has its gondolas; Giethoorn the punter. This flat-bottomed boat sailing the Gieterse farmers for centuries of their farm to the country. Together with the “bootie”, the ‘ goat ‘ and the ‘ easy ‘ forms the punter ‘ gevaer ‘. With our sailing punts you can explore the village punterend, whether or not by means of our “punter speurtocht”. On the lake arrived, the mast upright and you can use the wind in the sails of enjoyment. Sailing with a punter is not difficult. The boats are stabile and, although it actually is not necessary to know, the lakes Bovenwiede and Zuideindiger Wiede are not deep!
With the rowing boat sails you preferably by the last piece of the village Canal to the idyllic Zuideindiger Wiede. In this shallow (about 1.20 meters) more you can quietly along the cane boating and enjoy what nature offers you at that time. Breeding birds, seagulls colony and you might even see a few deer run through the reeds.
In the middle of the lake or along the side you can have a picnic or a fisherboat. Also to swim you can rest assured to the Zuideindiger Wiede. Because the village canal is narrow and sometimes somehwat crowded, we don’t reccommend taking the rowing boats to the other lake.
With our single or double kayaks or in a Canadian Canoe, you can make wonderful tours through the village, on the lakes and natural areas.
See our packagedeals (arrangementen) also for the possibilities of our cruise to expand with food or all sorts of other fun activities.
After experiencing your day in Giethoorn you would probably like to enjoy a nice dinner. Enjoy a refreshing drink on or terrace at the waterfront and maybe order at our snackcorner. Also for complete dinner a la carte or as plate service, Smit Giethoorn is the place to be. Of course we also bake delicious Gieterse pancakes.
Donate at our cosy bar or tapping a glass, we gladly. Note: almost every wednesday evening exercises pirates choir ‘The Tears’ with us. It can then suddenly be very sociable!
