Giethoorn
Giethoorn was founded around 1230, when so-called ' flaggelanten ' (wandering itself self-degree switch because of the plague) located in the savage land. There was a village where residents engaged with peat digging, fisheries, cane cultivation and small-scale farming.
Peat grounds were used by the uncontrolled, most in storms and floods the lakes in the area: the Bovenwiede, Zuideindiger, Wiede Molengat, large and Quiet Belterwiede and of course the Beulakerwiede, where Beulaecke in 1776 the village disappeared in the waves.
For the transportation of peat were dug the canals. Many were Later converted into peat houses and farms were also cattle, hay and yes even the postman and the Baker, by boat through the canals.
Still is a big part of the old village only via the water and a bike-pedestrian path with many bridges to reach. This entourage, along with the many old peat cottages and farms, often with typical camel roofs, giethoorn makes a popular spot for tourists and day trippers. It is there wonderful cycling, boating and hiking.
Winter is the time of a single hiker and, ice and re-serving, thousands of skaters. The after season is the cosy and peaceful. The main season is crowded, with numerous events, such as the Gondola sea shipping, jazz and blues festival, the battle op 't Wiede (with choirs) and so on.
